What is Quick Access Toolbar in Excel?

The Quick Access Toolbar in Microsoft Excel is a small, customizable toolbar that gives you fast access to frequently used commands—no matter which tab is selected on the Ribbon.

The Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) is a customizable toolbar in Microsoft Excel (and other Office apps) that provides one-click access to frequently used commands. It is located either:

  • Above the Ribbon (default position)
  • Below the Ribbon (can be moved)

Key Features of QAT:

✔ Saves Time – Access commands without navigating tabs.
✔ Customizable – Add or remove buttons as needed.
✔ Always Visible – Stays fixed even when scrolling.
✔ Works in All Tabs – Unlike the Ribbon, QAT is always available.

  • Usually located at the top-left corner of the Excel window (above or below the Ribbon).
  • You can add or remove commands like Save, Undo, Redo, Print, etc.
  • Helps you work faster by keeping your most-used tools always visible.

Examples of Commands You Can Add:

  • Save
  • Undo / Redo
  • New Workbook
  • Quick Print
  • Sort & Filter
  • Format Painter

How to Customize the QAT

1. Add a Command

  • Click the dropdown arrow () on the QAT.
  • Select a command (e.g., Print, New, Open).
  • OR: Right-click any Ribbon command → “Add to Quick Access Toolbar”.

2. Remove a Command

  • Right-click the QAT button → “Remove from Quick Access Toolbar”.

3. Move Below the Ribbon

  • Right-click QAT → “Show Below the Ribbon”.

4. Advanced Customization

  • Go to File → Options → Quick Access Toolbar.
  • Choose from All Commands (e.g., Paste Values, Sort, Macro).
